Raining

It's raining
It's pouring
The old man
is snoring.

He bumped his head
on the foot of the bed
and he couldn't get up
in the morning.

Rain rain, go away, come again some other day! It's been raining all day. It's damp and cloudy and foggy and misty and I like it. I think I'll go and make some tea. The end.

Busy Boy

Both of my boys stay pretty busy....but right now....this one is the busiest. Billy will be 15 in a couple of weeks....ACK! Why does 15 sound so much older than 14?? Anyway, since his birthday is coming up, we enrolled him in Drivers Education....after school 4 nights a week for 4 weeks. Billy driving? What were we thinking? The 2.5 hours of Drivers Ed each day doesn't take up that much time, but add that to 6:00 A.M baseball practices and a full school day and confirmation and whatever else he can fit in, my boy is busy.

Busy but smiling. High School baseball tryouts are next week....if he makes a team I think then he'll really be finding out what busy is all about. But it's all good, as long as he keeps smiling.

Baby Avery

A sweet little bundle of joy came into the world on Saturday. Her name is Avery Catherine Kalkes...born at 9.29 AM weighing 8 lbs 7 oz with a full head of black hair. Such a beautiful baby. Just look at that hair!

She was born to my beautiful niece Stephanie and her husband Jim. What an exciting time for them. I stole a few pictures from Steph's facebook page, I couldn't resist....they are just too cute! Here is Steph and Jim with baby Avery.

Sweet little Avery was pretty comfy inside of her mommy....a week past due, an induction of labor, and then 50+ hours before she decided to enter the world. I'd say that she was worth the wait...but I wasn't the one in labor! Babies are on their own schedule. How can someone so small take such complete control of their parents lives and turn them upside down? Happens every time....just like it is meant to. :-)

The name Avery comes from my dad's family. His middle name was Avery, the name originally was a surname in the family. Catherine is Stephanie's mom's name. I love that Steph is sentimental about using family names. My dad is smiling down on them, I know that for sure!
My mom is pretty excited about being a great grandma for the first time. Maybe not about the great part so much, but having another baby to love is pretty special for her. I think baby Avery looks pretty happy about meeting her great grandma too.

Eric was pretty excited about meeting baby Avery too. He's pretty sentimental when it comes to babies.

I think that it probably brought him back to 30 years ago when he got to meet baby Stephanie for the first time. I would say that baby Avery looks like her momma!

My brother is a grandpa. Hah! Seriously though, a very proud grandpa. How could he not be? Stephanie is such a joy, Avery is bound to be too....it's just how it works.

This baby is going to be loved, by her wonderful parents, by a doting great grandma, by doting grandmas and grandpas and great aunts and uncles and regular aunts and uncles....

....we're a couple of the great aunts and uncles....

....at least I hope that she'll think we're great!

Sweet Avery, you better hold onto that mamma's finger tight...because there are lots of us that want to hold and cuddle and snuggle you and watch over you and love you forever!

What do you think of that??

WHAT?!? Wise move. You stick with that mamma and dadda of yours, you can't go wrong with those two. Welcome to the family sweetie, don't worry, you'll get used to us.

Molly

My favorite blogger, The Pioneer Woman, is having a photo contest this week. It's a contest for cat pictures. Her photo contests get a crazy number of pictures submitted...this one is no exception. I entered a photo today...this one of Molly the Bird watcher.

I like it because she's so intense. Cats are either napping or intense. Sometimes their intensity is spent ignoring humans. Here she looks sort of interested, sort of relaxed, almost friendly....

...and then the eyes start to close and you can just hear her say...ho hum...I am bored of you. She is the queen you know. It was funny how many of the cats posted on the Pioneer Woman's contest were Tabby's that looked just like Molly. Bored Tabby's. Crabby Tabby's. Cool stare Tabby's. Sleeping Tabby's. Tabby, Tabby, Green eyed Tabby, calico, orange Tabby, Siamese, Black & White, Yellow eyed Tabby, Tabby, Tabby.
I probably won't enter any more photos for this contest. After a while all of the cats start looking the same. Like this.

And seriously, how much aloofness can you take in one day?

T-Shirts

One of my favorite things to do is to play volleyball. I've been playing on a women's team down in Apple Valley for a while, this winter I asked to just be a substitute because it's about 1.5 hours of driving for an hour of playing. It's fun to play with them, but the drive doesn't make sense for me. Anyway, I will be playing with them in the State Tournament in about 3 weeks....and the team needs matching shirts for state....so today I had some fun designing a shirt for the team. The team name is "You've Been Served". I found this fun guy with an ice cream cone....

...added a ball and a fun font and wha la....shirts fronts. They'll be screen printed, so I wanted to show options with one color of ink (above), two colors of ink on a colored shirt....

...and then my favorite design with 3 colors. The price goes up with the number of inks, so the team will probably pick the 2nd one....but I wanted to see it with some color. The shirt fabric can be any color, I just showed blue for the fun of it.

I sent them to the manager who said, "I like them, but I'm not crazy about the pink ice cream, I like chocolate"...so I sent her chocolate. Now we just have to keep her from licking the shirts.

This is an example of how it would look on the shirt. I'm not sure if the team will use them, I haven't heard back from anyone....

...but that's OK....I lick them....or like them...or something. Hopefully the team will too!

Walkin'

It's been a beautiful week here weather wise. Warmer in Minnesota than in Atlanta Georgia. Since the wimpy "it's too cold" excuse is gone, I'm trying to get out walking everyday. Walking to get the dog out, walking to enjoy the weather, walking to get some exercise and hopefully say goodbye to Fatso Patso for the summer. Today the sun was shining, the snow was melt, melt, melting, the birds were singing. Well, I think that the birds were singing....I couldn't hear much with all of the panting that was going on. Unfortunately it wasn't the dog. My fat old dog is in better shape than me. Ugh. At least I didn't sniff any butts along the way. And that's all I have to say about that.

Here's a flower for ya. Ahhhhh.

The end.

Perspective

Isn't perspective an amazing thing? Today I'm thinking about perspective in regards to our weather. 40+ degrees with the sun shining and the snow melting....oh it feels so wonderful! But 40 degrees in October? Brrr....yuck...no!! It's all a matter of perspective. In October we just know that it's going to get worse and worse. Dread. In March we know it's going to just keep getting better and better. Hope! So many analogies that could be made there. But to keep this simple...and short....I think I'll just say that it would be good to live our lives with a spring like attitude...looking forward to it just getting better and better.

Anyway, a sunny and warm spring like day. It made Brian smile. Hi Brian, welcome home. Aren't you glad that I waited until the bus left before I took your picture??

Hey Billy, looks like you are smiling too. I see that you only have one headphone in your ear like usual...you wouldn't want to miss out on someones conversation or anything! Silly kid.

Penny was smiling too. We were just heading out for a walk, her favorite! Well, getting pet is her favorite....and getting chew bones is her favorite....and going to the country is her favorite...and getting attention is her favorite....and....well, you get the idea. She's easy to please. We had a nice walk. I have a new application for my phone that records the path we took, the miles, the time....it's very cool, and very handy. It's also a little bit like having big brother watching over me...but that's OK. This big brother doesn't call me fatso Patso or tell me how lazy I am every chance he can....wait, that was 40 years ago....I'm over it. Really.

On second thought, it's watching where I am, where I'm going, how many calories I am burning, how fast I'm doing it...maybe in it's own way it is calling me a lazy fatso Patso. Hmmm...I think I'll leave my phone at home tomorrow....and just enjoy the sunshine! Ahhhh.
